WHAT THE THEORY TEST CONSISTS OF : -

 1.   The Multiple Choice Questions

A question and some answers will appear onscreen.  Select the correct answer to the question by touching the screen. Some questions ask for more than one answer.  Some of the questions will be presented in case study format.    This shows a scenario on which 5 questions will be based.     The subject focuses on real examples and experiences that any driver may encounter.  You'll be asked 50 questions; the pass mark is 43.

2.   The Hazard Perception Test

The hazard perception element is also a computer based test.  You respond by clicking a button on the mouse. There's 14 video clips which give examples of real everyday driving.  In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will have 2 developing hazards.  To gain a high score you need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development.    The maximum score for each hazard is 5.    The pass mark for the hazard perception test is 44 out of 75.  You have to pass both parts of the theory test in one sitting, or you'll have to re-take the theory test.

What's A Developing Hazard ?

A hazard is anything which may cause a driver to change speed or direction, or something that could cause potential or actual danger.   An example of a developing hazard would be something like this: -   Imagine a parked van at the side of the road.  When you first notice it, it isn’t  changing - it’s just a parked van.    If you click the mouse at this point you'll not score any marks or lose any marks.   When you get closer to the van, you notice that its right indicator is flashing.   This might suggest that the driver is going to pull away into  the road, possibly in front of you.   Therefore, the hazard is now developing and a click of the mouse, at this point would score marks.   As you get even closer to the van, you may see it start to pull away from the side of the road.   The hazard is developing even further, so another click of the mouse would be appropriate at this point.  Basically, the more you feel the hazard could cause you to take evasive action, the more you click the mouse.

You'll not get a second try at a clip, as in everyday driving, you only get one chance to react to a real hazard.    If you click continuously throughout a clip, you'll score zero for that clip.

If You Pass : -

At the theory test centre you'll receive your theory test certificate, which has your theory test number on it.   You'll need this number when you apply for your practical driving test.   Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you passed it.  If you don't pass the practical test within this two year period, it expires, and you'll have to re-take another theory test.

If You Fail : -

You can re-book another theory test right away, but you can't re-take the test for another 3 clear working days.
